Project Context

This is the case study for my senior capstone project. We had to select a project demonstrating our cumulative skills gained throughout our college experience.

A chose to do an app, as it can demonstrate my mobile design and development capabilities.

I decided to go with a habit-tracking app after surveying students wishing for a more customizable habit app.

This app is estimated to be published to the App Store summer of 2024.

User Research Surveys

Insights

This section lists the key insights from the user interviews.

Most important features:

  • people found customization to be the upmost importance within a habit app.

  • people loved the push for consistency, such as keeping track of streaks.

  • people enjoyed having incentives, such as a reward system.

Missing features:

  • An equal focus on breaking bad habits as building good ones.

  • Incorporating their daily to-do list tasks and habits into one space.

  • A stronger incentive system.

Defining Important Features

Push for consistency → Displaying streak count

Having incentives → Earning points for a user’s wishlist

Focus on breaking bad habits → Bad habits will run the streak automatically until unchecked

Enhanced customization → Aesthetic based off user’s chosen background and color scheme

Design

Welcome Page

Customized Habits

Reward System

For incentives, users can earn points and create their own wishlist to celebrate keeping the habit.

They can also see the progress and success in a weekly and monthly report.

This page is simple, yet fully customizable - with the color filling in when a user selects a habit.

Users can select their background, enabling them to have their own aesthetic on the app. Additionally, they can choose the habit icon from a large selection.

Additionally streaks are displayed as well as a section for bad habits users are trying to break. In this section, users will uncheck them if they have broken the habit. For bad habits, the streak automatically runs until the user breaks it.

According to this UX article, welcome pages should be simple and short, allowing the user to hit the ground running.

I added a navigation progression bar to give the user an idea of the time it would take.

I also thought it was important to turn on reminders in the beginning, to establish more engagement and consistency from the start.
